Conservation Commission

The Nelson Conservation Commission was established by the Town of Nelson in accordance with RSA 36-A “for the proper utilization and protection of the natural resources and for the watershed resources of the town”.  The Conservation Commission is the only local board specifically charged to protect the natural resources of Nelson.  The conservation commission provides a focal point within the town government for environmental concerns.

The commission may advise the planning board and other local bodies on conservation matters.  It may act more directly to protect natural resources with approval of the selectmen and may manage conservation areas.

By State Statute a commission must:

  • a) conduct researches into its local land and water areas.
  • b) seek to coordinate the activity of unofficial bodies organized for similar purposes.
  • c) keep an index of all open space and natural, aesthetic or ecological areas…all marshlands, swamps and other wetlands.
  • d) keep accurate records of its meetings and actions.

In addition to the statutory duties listed above, the commission is authorized to:  1-recommend a program for the protection, development or better utilization of all areas (in the index.) 2-receive gifts of money or property, both real or personal, in the name of the town, subject to the approval of the town government, with such gifts to be managed by the commission.  The commission may also acquire in the name of the town, subject to approval, the fee in such land or water rights, or any lesser interest, and shall manage and control the same.  The town or commission does not have the right to condemn property for these purposes.  3- the commission may advertise, prepare, print and distribute books, maps, charts, plans and other material necessary for its work.
